Chamonix Mont Blanc 1924 Vintage French Travel Poster
by AUGUSTE MATISSE (1866-1931)
Printed by Imp. Cornille & Serre, Paris
Once Chamonix was chosen as the location for the first Winter Olympics in 1924, lots of facilities needed to be constructed – and promoted by their financier, the PLM Railway. For the new bobsled track, the poster commission went to prize-winning Salon painter Auguste Matisse. His unusual solution has the eagle of victory dominating the scene, nearly obscuring the famed mountainscape, granting us the bird’s view as it looks down on a team as they whiz by. Although the eagle clutches the French tricolor, it was the Swiss team that won with a total time of 5 minutes, 45.54 seconds.
This poster is reproduction of the original poster.
