Brides Les Bains Elegante - PLM French Railroad Company Vintage Poster by Leon Benigni
1929
This extremely chic poster was created to promote travel to Brides les Bains, a resort town nestled in the valley of three mountains in the Savoie region of southeastern France. The town, whose name comes from the natural mineral baths nearby, is shown as being dynamic here - one can engage in sports like tennis or golf, or take it easy by sipping a drink while wearing the day's highest fashions. Created by PLM train lines, we are told that Brides les Bains is a "station stop for elegant women", which this poster expertly illustrates.
This poster was created for the French Railway, P.L.M. – Paris, Lyon, Mediterranee. These three train hubs were the main departure points for rail travel in France during the 1920’s and into the 1930’s. PLM importantly connected the busy cities with the bucolic countryside, allowing a broad swath of the public to explore different regions; an activity previously afforded to only the highest of society.
Leon Benigni (1892-1948) was a skilled French artist, who worked predominantly in the fashion world. He created sketches for couturiers such as Balenciaga, Lanvin, and Schiaparelli and also created many illustrations for the front covers of fashion magazines such as Harper's Bazaar and La Donna. This strong background in depicting clothing is evident in this poster, as well as the few other travel and sports posters he created in his career.
This is the reproduction of the original poster and digitally cleaned and retouched in our workshop.
