Educated as a lithographer and advertising designer, he became technical director in a Zurich advertising atelier from 1904 to 1908. During this period, he attended the Kunstgewerbeschule Zurich. From 1914 to 1918, he worked for the Graphic Institute J.E. Wolfensberger in Zurich.
