De Electrische Gotthard-Spoorweg Original Swiss Art Deco Railway Poster,by
Otto Baumberger 1935

Publication Date: 1935

Poster art is one of Switzerland's significant contributions to decorative arts. About the poster: For over a century, Swiss graphic designers have given a solid personality to their art by synthesizing very different influences and cultures. The colors and layout of this poster indicate the evolution from Art Nouveau and Art Deco into a more modern approach to graphic design: gone are the Art Nouveau flourishes and the straight lines of Art Deco: this joyous examination of country life is rural and picturesque.

About the artist:
Otto Baumberger (1889- 1961) was ahead of his time in recognizing important aspects of consumer advertising. He sought the most appropriate way of conveying a message. The diversity of Baumberger's work exemplifies the history of Swiss poster art in the first half of the twentieth century, showing the development from the painterly artist's poster to incorporate design shaped by graphic art.

About the Gotthard railway line:
Opened in 1874, the Gotthard railway is the Swiss-trans-alpine railway line from northern Switzerland to the canton of Ticino. The line forms a significant part of an important international railway link between northern and southern Europe.
